Colombian flavours will have a special place in my palate forever! The incredible fruits, the soft meat and the fresh fish from the North: what did I eat in Colombia?

Breakfasts vary, but often include the eggs. The arepas are fantastic! They are a sort of subsitute of bread, made from corn flour and usually made with either cheese or avocado. Fresh fruit is also a must have!

The breakfast in La Villana is not included in the booking price, but costs only 8,500COP, and you can choose between 5 or 6 different options, and also have coffee and tea available for free all day.

This is the typical colombian dish. It’s usually a soup + main + juice. The soup usually has two kinds of potatoes, corn, some meat / fish and vegetables, and it’s made like a broth. The main dish typically has meat / fish and is served with rice, salad, patacon (a fruit that looks like a banana, but bigger, and it’s usually served grilled with salt), beans or yucca (this is a white vegetable, large and long, sometimes served fried). Usually a fresh juice is also served with the meal, the one I found the most was tomate-de-arbol. Tomate-de-arbol is a small red fruit, similar to a grapefruit. The corrientazo is both the cheapest and most delicious meal I tried in Colombia! The cheapest I bought cost only 6,000COP in Bogotá (soup + main + juice), and the most expensive was in San Andrés, 20,000COP just for the main.

You’ll find lots of fresh ingredients in Colombia, so the food is always really tasty. The meat is incredible, and there are fruits I have never seen in my life! Typically food tends to go more on the sweet side – never too spice nor too salty.

In Bogotá, 2 places you MUST go: Andres Carne de Res (in the Hacienda / Santa Barbara) and Abasto in Usaquén.

I tipically follow a paleo-inspired diet, so gluten / sugar / refined / processed foods are OUT. However, I like to try everything, and I do open my exceptions sometimes when travelling… And as you can see from the images below, we totally lost our minds here 🙂

I only ate on long-haul flights. Unfortunately they don’t yet offer paleo-meals as a dietary option, and I still get very confused on what should I order on these flights… I had selected the “gluten-free” option, but was definately not the best option, lots of refined products, sugars and vegetable oils. On my return flight I had a normal meal, as I was offered a different flight option last minute (due to the situation in Paris, following the events on November 13th… My flight was November 15th to Paris, and I was offered a re-route). Both flights were operated by KLM.

I must say my belly as also really enjoyed this trip to Colombia 🙂
