Leonardo DiCaprio: “Let’s not take this planet for granted”

Congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio, for finally been awarded with an Oscar for Best Actor playing Hugh Glass in the The Revenant! Despite the most awe inspiring scenery, DiCaprio reminds us of the difficulty the crew had to find locations with snow (the entire movie was filmed on location rather then studio sets).

And so, DiCaprio delivered a great moving speech when accepting the award, emphasizing the importance of fighting climate change:

Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much.

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

For those who don’t know, in 1998 DiCaprio established a foundation with a mission to promote the Earth’s last wild places and build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world – The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF).

Leonardo DiCaprio speaking at the United Nations Climate Summit in NY, 2014. The summit brought together world leaders, scientists and activists looking to curb climate change.

The LDF dedicated to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants. Through collaborative partnerships, the foundation supports innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities, working in four key areas: Protecting Biodiversity; Oceans Conservation; Wildlands Conservation; Climate Change.

DiCaprio’s long little-known commitment to preserving the global environment also earned him the role as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

I think it is amazing to stand for such an important task as it is trying to save the planet. And it is also a task that we, as travellers, should also bear the responsibilities of reducing our carbon footprint through reducing the trash amounts we produce and leave behind, respecting the countries and biodiversity of the places we travel to, consider transportation alternatives to reduce carbon footprint and contribute towards foundations and institutions that work in these areas also.
